Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

What is KnightVision?

KnightVision is a chess companion app that helps you scan scoresheets, recognize board positions with your camera, analyze games with a chess engine, solve puzzles, and import games from Chess.com and Lichess. It's available on iOS and the web.

How do I create an account?

You can sign up with your email and password, or use Google Sign-In, Apple Sign-In, or a one-time password (OTP) sent to your email or phone number.

How do I connect my Chess.com or Lichess account?

Go to your profile settings and enter your Chess.com or Lichess username. You can also enable auto-import to automatically pull in your recent games. This is done during onboarding or anytime from the settings page.

Scanning & Analysis

How does scoresheet scanning work?

Take a photo of your handwritten chess scoresheet (or select one from your photo library), and our AI will read the moves and convert them into a digital game record (PGN). The image is processed in real time and is not stored permanently.

How does the board scanner work?

Point your camera at a physical chessboard and KnightVision will detect the pieces in real time using computer vision. You can save the detected position, add a title and notes, or start an engine analysis from there.

How accurate is the scanning?

Accuracy depends on image quality, lighting, and handwriting clarity (for scoresheets). For best results, use good lighting and make sure the full scoresheet or board is visible in the frame. You can always correct any errors after scanning.

How do game reviews work?

Game reviews analyze every move in your game using the Stockfish chess engine. Each move is classified (brilliant, great, good, inaccuracy, mistake, or blunder) and you get an accuracy score, opening name, and detailed move-by-move feedback.

Subscriptions & Billing

What are the subscription tiers?

KnightVision offers three tiers:

  • Pawn (Free): 5 board scans/mo, 5 scoresheet scans/mo, 5 puzzles/day, 3 game reviews/mo
  • Knight ($4.99/mo or $34.99/yr): 30 board scans/mo, 30 scoresheet scans/mo, 20 puzzles/day, 15 game reviews/mo
  • King ($12.99/mo or $99.99/yr): Unlimited everything
How do I cancel my subscription?

On iOS: Go to your device's Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions, find KnightVision, and tap Cancel Subscription.

On the web: Go to Settings in the app and manage your subscription through Stripe. Your access continues until the end of the current billing period.

Can I switch between plans?

Yes. You can upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time. On iOS, changes take effect at the next billing cycle. On the web, you can manage plan changes from the Settings page.

How do I request a refund?

iOS purchases: Refunds are handled by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com to request a refund.

Web purchases: Contact us at the email above and we'll help you with your Stripe subscription.

Account & Data

How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings in the app and select "Delete Account." This will permanently remove all your data, including your games, saved positions, profile, puzzle stats, scan history, preferences, and subscription records. This action cannot be undone.

Can I export my games?

Yes. You can export your games in standard PGN (Portable Game Notation) format, which is compatible with most chess software and platforms.

Can I delete individual games or positions?

Yes. You can delete individual games from your game history and individual saved positions from the positions screen at any time.

What data do you collect?

We collect only what's needed to provide the service: your email, chess profiles, games, saved positions, and feature usage counts. We don't use any analytics SDKs, advertising trackers, or cross-app tracking. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Troubleshooting

The scoresheet scanner isn't reading my moves correctly

Make sure the scoresheet is well-lit, flat, and fully visible in the frame. Avoid shadows and try to keep the camera steady. If some moves are misread, you can manually edit them after scanning.

The board scanner isn't detecting pieces correctly

For best results, position the camera directly above the board with even lighting. Avoid glare on the pieces. The scanner works best with standard tournament-style pieces and boards.

My games aren't importing from Chess.com or Lichess

Make sure you've entered your exact username (case-sensitive for Lichess). The import pulls your most recent games — if you have a new account with no games, there won't be anything to import. Also ensure you have an internet connection.

I'm not receiving my OTP email or text

Check your spam or junk folder for email OTPs. For phone OTPs, make sure you entered the correct number with country code. If the issue persists, try signing in with a different method or contact us.
